Review & Giveaway: STM Bags Jacket for iPad

STM Bags is a company based out of Australia, with offices in nearly ever corner of the world, that is based on protecting your digital cargo. Founded in 1998 just outside of Sydney, Australia in the famous Bondi Beach suburb, their mission remains to come up with a more comfortable, secure and stylish means of transporting your portable electronics. They offer a lineup of various iPad Bags and other accessories, such as the Jacket for iPad.

In a previous review, we gave STM Bags’ Org Board a fairly unfavorable critique. The Jacket for iPad, on the other hand, is a tremendously better designed product that far outdoes the quality of the Org Board. The Jacket for iPad is minimally packaged with recyclable materials as part of STM Bags’ commitment to minimizing their impact on the environment. Read on to find out just how much better the Jacket for iPad is in our in-depth review. Plus, leave a comment (continental US residents only), and you’re entered into a giveaway to win your very own Jacket for iPad!

STM Bags has specifically designed the Jacket to fit the iPad. The exterior of this iPad Bag is made of water-resistant, dotted nylon with a padded, high density sponge backing. You can get your Jacket in black with a teal accent (as shown), in chocolate with an orange accent, or in a limited edition pink color. All three color choices have nice load bearing stitching across the front of the bag. It has a shoulder strap that can be adjusted or removed entirely by unhooking its durable clips. After some slight adjustments, the strap rested very comfortably on my shoulder. Depending on how tall you are, the Jacket should rest nicely alongside your waist. There is a “quick grab” handle on the side of the carrying case if you choose to remove the shoulder strap.

Weighing just under half a pound, the Jacket is very lightweight and has a slim profile. Unlike some of their other products, the STM Bags logo is professional-looking and unobtrusive. There is a main zippered pocket with a soft brushed polyester lining for your iPad. There are also three additional pockets that each have their own various purposes:

Back “Slip” Pocket (teal nylon lining): Can be used to store paperwork and other larger itemsFront Zippered Pocket (teal nylon lining): Can be used to store cables, headphones, and other medium sized itemsFront “Slider” Pocket (teal soft polyester lining): Specifically designed as a holster for your iPhone, iPod, or other portable devices

This carrying case is beneficial for students, business professionals, and world travelers. You can bring your iPad and its peripherals with you in one slim and light jacket. If you want, you could also drop this carrying case into another bag. Despite being designed specifically for the iPad, this carrying case could also be used with a Samsung Galaxy Tab or many other similarly-sized tablets. It is a very functional and multipurpose carrying case with a designer style.

This jacket provides full protection for your iPad. The soft polyester lining ensures that your iPad will remain free of scratches, dents, or other wear and tear. This soft lining can also be used to clear fingerprints and other smudges off of the screen.

The zippered pocket ensures that your iPad won’t fall out of the carrying case when you’re on-the-go. The majority of the carrying case is made of padded nylon with a sponge backing which absorbs shocks and protects against impact damage from drops. If you’re still paranoid, the carrying case has enough leisure room to store an encased iPad.

STM Bags products, including the Jacket, can be found at online and offline retailers such as Altrec and RadTech. The Jacket retails at a very reasonable price of $24.95†. Most of these online retailers provide free shipping on orders of a certain dollar amount. At this price, including the costs of shipping, this is still a very good value for this carrying case!

STM Bags’ Jacket carrying case for iPad combines function and style into one. If our previous review of the STM Bags Org Board gave you a bad first impression of the company, perhaps the Jacket will make you think otherwise. The best thing about this carrying case is that it will be compatible with the upcoming, and highly rumored, second-generation iPad. Kudos to that! Also consider looking into other iPad accessories by STM Bags such as the Glove sleeve and the Scout shoulder bag. If you have a laptop, check out their Laptop Bags. All STM Bags products are backed by a limited product lifetime warranty.

† All prices are in US currency unless stated otherwise.

TinyUmbrella Updates with iOS 4.3 Support

TinyUmbrella, “the firmware umbrella“, has been updated to support the latest GM build of iOS 4.3. Assuming that there won’t be another 4.2-like incident, this new TinyUmbrella should also work on the public build being released on the 11th.

via @notcom

TinyUmbrella with 4.3GM support released. Also fixed a couple bugs with the Mac version.

This update provides iOS 4.3 GM support as well as uses your system proxy settings when launching the TinyUmbrella loader. I’ve also made a few tweaks to streamline the currently saved shshs. I’m still working on the windows recovery kick out fix for 4.2.1 – I should have that finished this week (hopefully). Enjoy

TinyUmbrella allows you to downgrade your firmware to a previous version by saving your SHSH blobs, as well as downgrade the iPhone 4's baseband to a firmware that Apple is still signing (or preserve it, if you have not yet upgraded).

iPhone 5 to Ditch Glass Back in Favor of Aluminum?

According to a Chinese source, the next iPhone will have an aluminum backing much like the soon-to-be-released iPad 2, instead of the current shatter-prone glass design. Apple still hasn’t managed to figure out how to paint an iPhone 4 white, so a complete redesign would finally allow them to move on from that aging issue. The source also claims that Apple will be redesigning the antenna to rid the device of the infamous death-grip, and that the iPhone 5 will feature the iPad 2's dual-core A5 chip. No surprise there, though battery life will be a tough problem to solve (the iPad 2 is nearly 50% lithium).

The current iPhone’s design is extremely beautiful, but has been the source of numerous headaches. Moving to a more traditional (unibody?) aluminum design would be a smart move for Apple, if they ever want to please Consumer Reports.

iOS 4.3 GM on iPod touch 4G Jailbroken Before Official Release

posted by Jonathan Kizer on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at 5:00 pm.

Boom! iOS 4.3 (you know, the version of iOS that was released to developers just this morning) has already been jailbroken, thanks to Johnny Franks.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and the screenshots show it all. Franks has only confirmed that his jailbreak (which has not been released yet) will work on the iPod touch 4G, though there’s no reason to suspect that the program will not work on any other device that is currently jailbreakable.

The jailbreak is tethered, so you must use a program on your computer to force it to reboot. It isn’t a huge deal, though it may be enough to keep some jailbreakers on their untethered iOS 4.2.1.

The tweet reads:

iPod touch 4g 4.3 GM jailbroken http://t.co/1lAdecX http://t.co/IEoqx44

While iOS 4.3 GM appears to be jailbroken, that could change by the final release. Apple may choose to patch the exploit used at the last moment, and simply not release another GM and hope that the patch doesn’t break any App Store apps.

There’s no word on a release date, but you can assume that it won’t be long after iOS 4.3 is officially released.

Thanks, jcf_dev (also known as momentumhacker)!

Apple has rolled out the lastest version of iTunes, which is required for the iPad 2 and iOS 4.3. It’s a good idea to go ahead and install it now, so you don’t have to wait around to activate your new tablet on the 11th. Apple has also improved the Home Sharing function, which allows users to stream media to other computers on a local network.

Available via Apple or the built in updater.

SHAtter, Limera1n Patched in iPad 2

MuscleNerd and the gang have confirmed that those meddling Apple engineers have patched both the SHAtter and Limera1n vulnerabilities in the iPad 2. Other exploits are being worked on, but p0sixninja has tweeted that “the exploit is very complicated, so I’m not positive. But things aren’t looking good. I’m still optimistic though“.

@iH8sn0w

Confirmed: limera1n is patched in iPad 2.

@MuscleNerd

Early testing also seems to show at least one thing SHAtter depends on was gone by March 2010 too :(

This means any early iPad2 jailbreaks will have to be purely userland

This means that hackers will need to start from scratch and find a brand-new vulnerability in order to jailbreak the iPad 2. An untethered userland jailbreak will likely be released first, possibly followed by an untethered jailbreak sometime in the future.
